A smart start for oral facial health

Did you know 60% of jaw growth happens in the first 4 years of life? During this critical stage, proper chewing plays a key role in shaping and strengthening the muscles and bones of the lower third of the face.

In an age of soft, processed foods, munching on a Myo Munchee is a simple, effective way to encourage the kind of targeted, consistent exercise a child may not otherwise get, helping to support the healthy development of the lips, face, and jaw.

The benefits of a good chew

Invented by Australian dentist Dr Kevin Bourke, the Myo Munchee is designed to encourage active chewing, which can help to:

  • Encourage proper jaw growth and alignment
  • Promote nasal breathing
  • Ensure correct swallow patterns
  • Reduce open bite and tongue thrust
  • Improve sleep and speech patterns
  • Set the foundation for long-term oral health

Start with just 3 minutes of chewing twice a day, building towards 5 minutes of chewing, twice daily.

FAQs

  • How to find the right size for a child in a transition phase?

The Myo Munchee Mini is suitable for children from 18 months old to 4 years old. However, this is purely a guideline. Children who have obvious signs of oral dysfunction will often have underdeveloped jaws and may need to have a smaller size Myo Munchee.

If your baby is on the cusp of 18 months, it’s best to start with the Myo Munchee Bebe and move on to the Mini after six months of Bebe use. If they are older than 4 years with an inter-canine width measurement of less than 30mm, they may be better suited to starting with a Myo Munchee Mini.

Once they can maintain a good lip seal, breathing through their nose and controlling the saliva while chewing, they can progress to the Myo Munchee Junior.

If in doubt, it may be best to check in with a Munchee Certified Practitioner.
  • How often should a child use the Myo Munchee Mini?

For this age group, we usually recommend starting with a 3-minute chew, twice a day, gradually building to 5 minutes twice per day, although this will vary depending on age, ability, level of dysfunction, and goals. If your child is dealing with dysfunction, speak with your treating practitioner for guidance.
  • How to establish a chewing routine with a child?

Find a good time to sit with your child so that you can ensure that lips are together and they are keeping the Munchee in the right place while chewing. This will ensure they get optimal benefits from chewing as well as preserving the life of the device.

Munching while Mum or Dad are reading a story is a great way to get into a good routine. Bathtime can also be a fun time to munch. We’ve even made the Munchee Moves song just for Myo Munchee time, complete with a set of body movements to get your child munching and moving.
  • Can the Myo Munchee replace the pacifier/dummy or thumb-sucking?

The Myo Munchee is a great transition tool to get a child off the pacifier, dummy, or thumb and can help restore strength to the jaw bones and muscles. Watch our video to see Dr Staci Whitman explain how the Myo Munchee can replace thumb sucking.

If your child is struggling with this transition, working with a practitioner will make all the difference!
